Learn How To Play a One Handed Roll
The One Handed Roll is a myth that drummers have been talking about for years and years. Some think that it is impossible, while others prove them wrong time and time again. The truth is, playing a One Handed Roll actually isn't that difficult. I have heard of drummers learning to play a One Handed Roll in less than 5 minutes flat.
Believe it or not, there are 3 different methods that you can use to play a One Handed Roll. The first and most popular is the rim roll; which has also been called the freehand technique and gravity roll. This is done by making a see-saw motion on the rim of the snare drum. You will actually get 2 strokes for every one motion on the snare drum.
The second and much less popular is called the fanning technique. This was made popular by Buddy Rich. This is done by using a sweeping motion over the drumhead. It can be done on any drum or cymbal. This method takes a lot longer to develop then the rim roll and also lacks in power.
The third and final method that we know of it the push-pull or up-down roll. This is done in a similar way then the rim roll, however, we are shifting the fulcrum point to our fingers instead of the rim. This is one of the most difficult to develop as it can takes months and months of muscle training.
My recommendation is to learn the rim roll, it is the most applicable in today's modern music. To learn this correctly, I recommend you check out Jared Falk's One Handed Roll DVD.
